When one of your buddies becomes available in iChat, you hear a sort of "whooshing" sound, It is quiet and subtle and doesn't interrupt your work. The problem is that you have to check your Buddy List to see who just became available.
You can very easily change the notification so that your Mac speaks the name of your buddy when they become available.
In the Event dropdown, choose "Buddy Becomes Available".
Check the "Announce when event occurs" checkbox.
Now when one of your Buddies become available, your Mac will announce "{buddy name} is now available."
Check out the other Events in the dropdown. Besides "Buddy Becomes Available", you can have any of the events spoken.
iChat uses the currently selected system voice to speak the announcement. To change the voice, go to System Preferences (under the Apple menu) and choose the Speech pane and then the Text to Speech tab. "Alex" is the default voice but you can choose any one you like.
