New Mac? Recycle Your Old Computer
Being environmentally friendly
If you are new to the Mac, you probably have an old computer sitting there that has been replaced. And even Mac owners that love their Macs eventually upgrade to a new one. So what should you do with the old one?

You have several options to recycle your old computer. But first, you need to ask how old is old. If your computer is more than 4 or 5 years old it is worth about the same as a doorstop. In that case, you should probably skip ahead to the last option: actual recycling.

  • Recycle by selling the computer to some one else. eBay is a good place to go to sell used computers and I've had good luck in the past selling computers and other hardware there. To get an idea what your computer is worth, look for closed auctions for the same model and check out the final selling price. On eBay, remember, always start low and let people bid up.
  • Recycle by donating your computer to a worthy cause. Many non-profit organizations such as Youth for Technology Foundation would love to have your old (but not obsolete) hardware. Or donate the old computer to Goodwill. Don't forget to get a receipt and take the tax deduction.
  • Recycle by giving your computer to a friend or family member. Even though you have the newest and the best doesn't mean that someone you know wouldn't be thrilled to have an older computer for email and web surfing. Consider someone who has never had a computer before. It could open a whole new world to them. IMPORTANT: never ever ever donate a doorstop computer to someone you know!
  • Recycle. Apple has a plan where you can send in your old computer for free when you buy a new computer from them. This is the best plan for those doorstop computers that are 4 or 5 or more years old. Check out the details of Apple's plan here. Also, many communities have drop off locations or specific dates that they will accept obsolete computer and electronics equipment. Try Googling "recycle old computers" for more information.
Whichever route you take to recycle your computer, the planet will love you for it.
