A simple way to add password protection to your Mac is to require a password when the Mac wakes from sleep or when the screen saver is turned off.

Password protection is a good way to keep the data on your computer private and away from prying eyes. It is an especially good idea if you use your notebook Mac in a public place like a coffee shop and need to make a quick run to the counter for a refill..

WARNING: Before you turn on password protection, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THE PASSWORD TO YOUR ACCOUNT!!

To turn on simple password protection:

  • Open System Preferences from the Dock or the Apple Menu.
  • Go to the Security pane
  • On the General tab, check the box "Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver"
  • Note: This password protection is simple and effective in most cases, but it is not foolproof. Someone who knows what they are doing can circumvent any password protections that you put into place.
