Opening Music, Photos and Movies into other applications
Direct access from the Open Dialog
Media browser

Here is a nifty trick that I just learned myself. Many applications like email or word processors will let you insert media such as music, photos or movies. If you have a large monitor, drag and drop from iTunes, iPhoto or iMovie works great. But if you don't have a large enough screen to show both applications at the same time, you can access your media items directly from the Open file dialog.

Probably the reason I never discovered this trick before is because the Media items are out of sight. The way the Open file dialog is normally sized, you won't see the Media list without scrolling all the way to the bottom of the left pane. Also, the Media items only show in places where it makes sense to insert music, photos or movies.

Once you select a Media type, you have access to all of your iTunes media and playlists, Aperture, iPhoto and PhotoBooth photos and your iMovie projects, iPhoto, PhotoBooth and iTunes movies.

Great tip! However the only item that shows up in the Media section of my sidebar is Photos. Any ideas why that would be the case?

The theory of this is that only items that "make sense" are shown. For instance, if you try to open a file in Safari, only Photos are shown. OK, makes sense because Safari can open photos but would have to pass Movies off to Quicktime and Music off to iTunes.

I didn't always find that the "makes sense" rule was followed very well. iChat happily let me assign a song as my Buddy Pic, although what I ended up with was the file icon. Hmm, not too smart on that one.
