.PDF files are a standard file format where the .pdf document always looks the same regardless of the computer it is viewed on, even Windows PCs. This makes .pfd files ideal for sharing documents.

You can create a .pdf file from any document that you can print. In the Print dialog, click the PDF button and choose Save as PDF...

If you are sharing the .pdf file, you might find it useful to Annotate (see Annotating tip) or Mark Up certain parts of the text. Preview offers three different types of Mark Up: Highlight, Strikeout, and Underline (in red).

To Mark Up text in a .pdf file:

  1. Make sure the Text button is selected in the Toolbar.
  2. Select the text that you want to Mark Up.
  3. In the Menu Bar, go to Tools / Mark Up and then choose the type of Mark Up you want to use.
Make sure you save the .pdf file to save your Mark Ups.
