Upgrading iCal Data to the New Format

If you have MobileMe, you may have received a message asking if you want to upgrade to the new MobileMe calendar. Also, if you access your calendar from me.com, you may have received an invitation to the new Beta version of the MobileMe calendar.

(I say "may have" because Apple is rolling the new version of the calendar to MobileMe users in small groups over time.)

The term "beta" means that new software is almost complete but the developer is still working out some of the bugs. While running the beta version of new software can be fun because you get early access to new features, there is the risk that a feature you rely on doesn't work properly or you could lose data.

In the case of the new iCal / MobileMe calendar, the beta version converts all of your calendar data to a new format. This means that if you have problems with the beta, you can't go back to the old version without restoring your old calendar data from a backup (and losing all the new Events and To Dos you entered since switching to the beta.)

My recommendation for now is to avoid the beta version of the new iCal / MobileMe calendar. The final version will be released soon enough and when it is, I will update this tip and re-run it.
