Your Mac has plenty of memory to run multiple
applications
at the same time. However, the Mac will run more efficiently if you close the applications you are no longer using.
The Dock shows a small blue orb under the Dock icon of applications that are open. If you have applications open that you aren't using, it is a good idea to close them.
One "feature" of Mac OS X that many people don't notice is that closing all of the windows of an application often doesn't close the application itself—it remains running. This is complicated by the fact that this behavior isn't consistent between all application. Some applications such as iPhoto do quit when their last window is closed.
To quickly close an application, click and hold on the Dock icon. A popup menu will appear and Quit is one of the options.
